The Joy of Grief Massage Class 2 of 5: Grief, the Body and the Nervous System is the second class in a five part training series.

The prerequisite for this course is The Joy of Grief Massage Class 1 of 5: Grief, the Body & the Nervous System. Please complete Class 1 before  taking Class 2.

Course History

After creating the Grief Massage modality, and teaching massage therapists in Canada, France, Australia, and all across the US (live in-person & via live webinar), Aimee was inspired to craft an online training experience that will reach even more grief-oriented massage therapists.

Based on her valuable experiences training massage therapists in Grief Massage (since 2012/2013), Aimee has created a learning experience that addresses the common needs, questions, and interest points of massage therapists who want to specialize in working with grieving clients.

This course, "The Joy of Grief Massage Class 2 of 5: Grief Massage Intake & Protocols" focuses on first contact with new Grief Massage clients and how each touchpoint leading up to the hands-on session (phone contacts, expectation setting, intake paperwork etc) can be customized for grief sensitivity.

This course also focuses on specific communication skills and processes that can be utilized to convey compassion and care while also establishing important boundaries to safeguard against practitioner burnout.

In her live and live webinar courses, Aimee typically spent 3 hours covering grief massage intake protocols. In creating this online learning experience for you, she has greatly expanded the course to 10 hours.

What You Will Learn

This course covers why Grief Massage intake protocols matter by exploring The Polyvagal Theory of the nervous system and the importance of offering safety cues to clients in a Grief Massage setting.

Students will gain a rich understanding of why a grieving client's experience BEFORE they arrive at the the office matters, along with gaining insights into how they as practitioners can create an atmosphere of safety and comfort through unique processes designed to decrease clients' anxiety about the first session.

Students will also learn how they as massage therapists can build rapport, set expectations, explain what Grief Massage is, set boundaries, and screen for clients who may not be appropriate for Grief Massage.

Aimee shares valuable communication skills, some personal experiences, and recommendations for learning to welcome a grieving client into the Grief Massage setting with sensitivity, care, and professionalism.

This course is designed to help grief oriented massage therapists implement best practices that will prepare them to confidently address "no shows" and last minute cancellations, to establish and warmly outline a Cancellation Policy, and to schedule Grief Massage sessions in a way that allows ample time for intake and session planning.

By the end of this course, students can expect to be prepared to craft a Grief Massage "Phone Script" that will empower them to clearly communicate with potential Grief Massage clients prior to setting an appointment. Students can also expect to be prepared to create a "What to Expect" document to mail or email new Grief Massage clients.

And, students will be guided in how to create a Resource Binder, for making referrals in situations where a Grief Massage client has expressed a need that falls outside of the massage therapy scope of practice.

How This Course Works

This course includes 10 hours of content, spread across 30 relevant topic areas.

Students will listen to/view a narrated slide on the topic, followed by an optional practice quiz question (usually scenario based) to check their understanding of the topic,

There is an optional transcript of the narrated slide (presented as an article) included in each section, so students can read the topic information after listening to the narrated slide.

At several points throughout the course, Aimee has posted check-in videos where she explores the topics covered to that point. At each check-in video, there is a discussion forum where students are encouraged to respond to the topic material by creating posts and responding to posts from other students.

After completing all 30 topics, students will download a course workbook (fill in the blank) and listen to Aimee's audio narration of the workbook. Students are encouraged to make notes, answer reflection questions, and use the workbook as an opportunity to deeply personalize the course content.

This course also includes a topic video and a downloadable resource form for creating a Grief Massage phone script and for creating a Grief Massage resource binder.
